After the long waiting, the refreshing new design iMac comes out to the public. The new design gives its a vibrant and lively vibe, yet spark the controversial.

The chin is thick; it’s one of many things that remain in this new generation of iMac. People (many) hoped that Apple would gives the front of the new iMac the same futuristic looking like what they did on iPad Pro, iPad Air, and the crazy expensive Pro Display XDR. Yes, they all dissapointed by the reveal. But I think that the chin gives it an iconic look and also give it more function.

iMac, like its ancestors, is designed to be fun, trendy, and iconic. One might argue that Apple can archive this without the chin or white bezel. No, I don’t think so. Imagine a small black bezel around the screen; it’s almost every desktop out there.

In addition, its chin has functions: to host components and to be personalize. Hosting components in the chin make an iMac thin, extremely thin. People might think that apple could make an iMac a little bigger and place every component on the back of the screen, like they did with the iPad. But I think that the chin is better be there. People can put their memo, stickers, or post-it like they use to do with the old iMac. An iMac will go to place like kitchen, living room, or even your workspace. Having a place on iMac to put your stickers on surely brings joys to its surrounding. It’s designed to be fun, remember?

The chip, M1, is unarguably powerful. It’s been proved to beat every laptop CPU on the market, yet power efficient enough. Many argue that iMac is a desktop computer. Apple should put a more powerful chip on the device; putting M1 to it was a miss of an opportunity. As I see it, the argument like this is not concern an iMac as a every people desktop but rather a pro machine. Most of the people who buy iMac wouldn’t mind about rendering 4K scene, compose 100 instruments in Logic, or processing an image of a black hole; even it’s very capable. Again, iMac is a device that goes to people living room. The general public is target group of this device. Having a power efficient chip that make almost no noise will give them better peace of mind and concentration to what they truly want to do. People will be more enjoying with the cheaper chip that efficient rather than with an expensive chip that they wouldn’t mind to leverage its power.

In conclusion, iMac’s chin is a neccessay part of an iMac that make it stand out. Putting M1 chips into the desktop computer is not a mistake, its proper for what their customers want.
